Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a time to raise awareness about the importance of early detection and screenings in the fight against breast cancer. This month hits close to home for many individuals and families, including myself. At the age of 18, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was a frightening time for our family, but thanks to the diligent work of advocacy groups and early screenings, my mother's cancer was caught early. After several rounds of radiation, we were relieved to hear that she was in remission.

The importance of early detection cannot be overstated. The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recently issued new draft recommendations for breast cancer screening. They lowered the age at which women should start screening from 50 to 40 years old. Women between the ages of 40 and 74 are now encouraged to get mammograms every other year. This shift in guidelines emphasizes the significance of early screenings in saving lives.

"Early detection plays a major role in successful treatment," says the USPSTF.

It is crucial for women within this age range to take advantage of this opportunity and schedule their next screening. The goal is to detect breast cancer before it causes any warning signs or symptoms. By finding breast cancer early, the chances of survival are significantly higher.

Most insurance plans cover breast cancer screenings, making it accessible for many individuals. If you are unsure about coverage or need assistance in scheduling a screening, contact your doctor or healthcare provider. They will be able to provide you with the necessary information and resources.

The Susan G. Komen Foundation estimates that there will be 297,790 new cases of invasive breast cancer among women in the United States in 2023. Tragically, an estimated 43,170 women will lose their battle with breast cancer this year. These statistics highlight the urgent need for awareness and action.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month serves as a reminder for women to prioritize their health and well-being. It is a time to encourage one another to get screened and spread awareness about the importance of early detection. Throughout the month, various events and initiatives will take place to educate and empower individuals.

For more information and resources about breast cancer, please visit the Illinois Department of Public Health website at dph.illinois.gov or call Rep. Weaver's District Office at (309) 204-6514.

Let us come together as a community and support one another in the fight against breast cancer. Remember, early detection saves lives. Get screened today!
