Congressman Darin LaHood (IL-16) has praised the Department of Energy's selection of the Midwest Alliance for Clean Hydrogen (MachH2) for the Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub Funding Opportunity. As part of this funding, a significant portion will be allocated to the construction of the world's largest nuclear-powered clean hydrogen production facility at Constellation's LaSalle Clean Energy Center in Marseilles, Illinois.
In a bipartisan effort, Rep. LaHood and other members of Illinois' Congressional Delegation wrote a letter to the Department of Energy in May expressing their support for the MachH2 application. The Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub will not only boost clean energy investments but also enhance energy security in the Midwest and across the nation. Furthermore, it will create job opportunities and establish a network of hydrogen producers in Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan.
"I applaud the selection of MachH2 as one of the nation’s first Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs, including its support for creating the world's largest nuclear-powered clean hydrogen production facility in Marseilles, Illinois," said Rep. LaHood. He emphasized that Illinois, particularly the 16th Congressional District, possesses abundant energy resources and a well-established agriculture, manufacturing, and transportation network. The project will strengthen energy security in Illinois and the entire country. Rep. LaHood highlighted the potential of central Illinois to lead in hydrogen production due to its robust nuclear and carbon-free energy sector. He pledged to continue advocating for an all-of-the-above energy approach that invests in domestic resources and restores the nation's energy independence.
The Midwest Hydrogen Hub is expected to facilitate clean hydrogen energy production for various industries, such as steel and glass production, power generation, refining, heavy-duty transportation, and sustainable aviation fuel. The Hub's development is projected to generate over 13,000 construction and permanent jobs.
