Today marks a significant milestone for the U.S. National Guard as we celebrate its birthday. Established in 1636, the National Guard holds the distinction of being the oldest military organization in the United States. Its inception was driven by the need for a citizen force that could protect families and towns from hostile attacks.

The National Guard plays a vital role in responding to state-level emergencies, particularly in times of natural disasters. Its members, known as citizen-soldiers, juggle their military duties alongside civilian jobs or college education. This unique arrangement allows them to maintain their military training part-time while serving their communities.

As Brigadier General John Smith explains, "The National Guard is a unique force that combines the skills and commitment of everyday citizens with the training and discipline of the military. We are proud to serve our communities and our country."

Training is a crucial aspect of National Guard service. Members dedicate around two days each month to training, with a more extensive annual training session. Although it may not be a full-time job, the demands of National Guard service require a lifestyle of commitment and sacrifice.

In recognition of this special day, let us express our gratitude to the men and women serving in the National Guard Armories in Galva and Kewanee, located in the 93rd District. Their dedication and selflessness are truly commendable. As Representative Jane Doe states, "Thank you to all of the men and women in Galva and Kewanee for your service. Your unwavering commitment to our community and our nation does not go unnoticed."

On behalf of the nation, we extend our warmest wishes to the U.S. National Guard on its birthday. Your unwavering dedication to protecting our communities and nation is deeply appreciated. Happy birthday to the U.S. National Guard!
