The Department of Public Works is closely monitoring the Illinois River as forecasted crest levels continue to decrease. As of today, Tuesday, January 30, the expected crest level has fallen from 22.5 feet to 22 feet. The river is projected to crest overnight on Thursday, February 1, and into the morning of Friday, February 2.
In light of the decreasing crest levels, the Department of Public Works is cautiously optimistic. However, they will continue to monitor river levels and conditions throughout the week. If the forecasted crest levels increase again, sandbagging efforts will be initiated in low-lying areas in Riverfront Park, which are prone to flooding at 22.7 feet.
The Department is prepared for any possible scenario and is currently readying equipment and planning for the next course of action should forecasted crest levels rise. Despite this, they do not anticipate any impacts to businesses along the riverfront or Water Street. However, it is possible that parking lot and sidewalk closures along the riverfront may occur in the coming days.
It is important to note that river levels may continue to fluctuate due to ice jams and melt rates in the northern portions of the Illinois River. Therefore, the Department of Public Works remains vigilant and ready to take action as needed.
In a statement regarding the current flood preparation efforts, a spokesperson for the Department of Public Works said, "We are closely monitoring the Illinois River and are pleased to see the forecasted crest levels decreasing. Our priority is to ensure the safety of the community and minimize any potential damage. We will continue to monitor the situation and take necessary measures if the crest levels rise again."
Residents and businesses in the area are advised to stay informed about the latest updates and to follow any instructions or precautions issued by the Department of Public Works.
