Statement From Mayor Ali
Our community is aware of multiple local protests that have occurred in Peoria surrounding the war in Gaza, the West Bank, and Israel.
Many in attendance in tonight’s City Council meeting have expressed their heartfelt concerns and have called for the Peoria City Council to approve a “Resolution Calling for an Immediate, Durable, and Sustained Ceasefire in Gaza, the West Bank, and Israel to Protect and Save Human Lives.”
I am aware that about 70 cities nationwide, including Chicago, have approved such a resolution. I am also aware that Chicago’s city council was very divided on this issue, voting 24-23 in support of their resolution.
Peoria is not Chicago. We cannot afford to allow this international issue to divide our city or our communities. Yet, I don’t want it to appear that our leadership is not concerned about the tragic loss of life that is occurring overseas daily and impacting the families and loved ones of some of our residents. We care about all human life in Peoria and beyond.
I have met with all sides on this issue and my message is consistent with everyone:
- As city leaders, this is not our fight;
- I/We do not vote on arms to foreign countries;
- I/We are not elected to legislate national issues;
- I/We will not take sides on this issue; it is not our duty;
- This is a divisive issue, and we cannot allow it to divide Peoria;
- I/We sympathize with the loss of human life and pray for Peace and Conflict Resolution.
