State Senator Neil Anderson and State Representative Travis Weaver are calling on Governor Pritzker and the General Assembly to allocate funds for critical repairs at the Bishop Hill State Historic Site. The site, located in Henry County, is a historic village founded by Swedish immigrants in 1846. It includes various historic buildings, memorials, a park, and a gazebo.
Senator Anderson expressed concern over the neglect of the site, stating, "The continued neglect of Bishop Hill is unacceptable. We need the Governor and the General Assembly to prioritize funding to repair and maintain these incredibly important structures." Representative Weaver also criticized the state's handling of the historic properties, saying, "Governor Pritzker should be embarrassed by his agency’s ability to care for historic buildings."
The buildings at Bishop Hill are in dire need of attention, with issues such as foundation cracks, water leaks, and rotting soffits and windowsills. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is responsible for maintaining the site but lacks the necessary funds for repairs. Representative Weaver called on Governor Pritzker to release discretionary funds to address the maintenance backlog, emphasizing the urgency of the situation to prevent further deterioration of the historic structures.
The Bishop Hill Heritage Association works to preserve the village as a living community and offers guided tours for visitors. However, without immediate action from the state legislature and the Governor, the site risks losing its historical significance. Bishop Hill was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1984.
A press conference addressing the urgent need for funding for Bishop Hill State Historic Site repairs was held in Springfield.
