On May 15, 2024, Senate Bill 2862, sponsored by State Representative Travis Weaver (R-Edwards), received unanimous approval from the House. The legislation mandates the publication of an annual list of the most sought-after education jobs on the Board of Higher Education’s website.
Rep. Weaver commented on the bill's potential impact, stating, “Students are trying to find careers that are in high demand now and in the future. This legislation will help students find those jobs, and I think this will be particularly beneficial for those entering the trades. Thank you to my colleagues for unanimously passing this bill.”
The annual list of in-demand education jobs will be assembled through a joint effort between the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and the Department of Employment Security. The starting salary, median salary, and typical education level for each job will be included in this list.
The bill is now awaiting signature from the Governor. Once signed into law, it will take effect on July 1, 2024.
