This summer, individuals are advised to exercise caution when engaging in activities on or in waterways due to the potential presence of harmful algal (cyanobacteria) blooms. These blooms can occur in any body of water and pose health risks.

Water bodies should be avoided if they exhibit any of the following characteristics:

- Resemble spilled green or blue-green paint

- Have surface scums, mats, or films

- Display a blue or green crust at the shoreline

- Are discolored or have green-colored streaks

- Contain greenish globs suspended below the surface

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) also recommends keeping pets away from water that may contain cyanobacteria. Pets should not drink from such water, swim in it, or lick their fur after contact with potentially contaminated water.
