The Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal is urging residents to adhere to proper safety practices when using grills during the upcoming July 4th holiday and throughout the summer. According to officials, July is the peak month for grill fires, followed by June, May, and August.

To promote a safe grilling season, the office has provided several guidelines:

- Propane and charcoal grills should only be used outdoors.

- The grill should be placed away from homes or deck railings and kept clear of eaves and overhanging tree branches.

- Children and pets should be kept at least three feet away from grilling areas.

- Grills should be cleaned regularly to remove grease or fat buildup from both the grills themselves and trays below them.

- Grills should never be left unattended.

- Gas grill lids must always be open before lighting.

- Gas tanks on propane grills and hoses should be checked for leaks each time before use.

- If gas is smelled while grilling, individuals should immediately move away from the grill and contact the fire department.

- Charcoal grill coals need to cool before being disposed of in a metal container.

- A fire extinguisher, bucket of water, or garden hose should always be nearby.
