Illinois is the leading state for pumpkin production in the United States, producing over 650 million pounds of pumpkins each year. This represents nearly 40% of the nation's total pumpkin output, surpassing the combined production of the next five largest pumpkin-producing states.
The state's central region offers rich soil and ideal growing conditions that support its dominance in pumpkin farming. Two major processing plants are located here: Nestle Libby in Morton and Seneca Foods in Princeville. Together, these facilities handle more than 85% of all canned pumpkins used across the country.
In addition to canned pumpkins, Illinois grows a variety of decorative jack-o’-lanterns and sugar pumpkins. Many residents enjoy visiting local pumpkin patches to pick their own pumpkins, a popular fall activity.
Morton, known as home to the Libby’s plant, processes over 90% of America's canned pumpkins. These products are used in various foods and beverages. The town also hosts an annual festival celebrating its status as a key player in the pumpkin industry.
Illinois' climate features warm summers and well-draining soil suitable for pumpkin cultivation. The state dedicates more than 18,000 acres solely to this crop.
