Breast Cancer Awareness Month highlights the ongoing battle against breast cancer and emphasizes the significance of early detection. This month serves as a tribute to those who have faced breast cancer and supports efforts in finding a cure.

The Susan G. Komen Foundation estimates that 310,720 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among women in the United States in 2024, with approximately 42,250 women expected to succumb to the disease this year.

Since January 2020, Public Act 101-0580 mandates coverage for preventive measures against breast cancer by both private insurance and Medicaid. This includes mammograms, ultrasounds, and MRIs when deemed necessary by medical professionals. Additionally, Public Act 103-0325, effective this year, ensures coverage for proton beam therapy when medically required for cancer treatment.

The Illinois Department of Public Health reports that over ten thousand women are diagnosed with breast cancer annually in Illinois. The United States Preventive Services Task Force has updated its recommendation for screening every other year starting at age 40 instead of 50. These laws and guidelines aim to enhance early detection and treatment options.

Screening tests play a crucial role in identifying breast cancer before symptoms appear, increasing survival chances through early intervention.

Individuals are encouraged to contact their healthcare providers to schedule screenings. For further information on breast cancer resources, visit the Illinois Department of Public Health website at dph.illinois.gov.
