A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was submitted to the City of Mason City, Illinois, regarding unpaid parking violations on October 28, 2024. The request was made by us at Peoria Standard, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
In our quest for transparency and accountability in public institutions, we requested records under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140. Specifically, we asked for a list of all parking violations currently unpaid within the city's jurisdiction. This includes details such as the name of the offender, their address, the amount due for each violation, the date of violation and total amount due.
As a media organization dedicated to gathering and reporting news to the public, access to these public records is crucial for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. We believe that through this information request and subsequent reporting on it, we can provide an additional layer of transparency to the public.
We also highlighted our eligibility for a fee waiver as a media professional in line with our role in disseminating information. We are now awaiting a response from the City of Mason City regarding this request.
