Today, an 18-year-old named Jaylan D. Russell was charged with Aggravated Battery with a Firearm and Aggravated Unlawful Use of Weapons in connection to a shooting that took place in August. The incident left another 18-year-old male injured outside Amir’s Market. A petition has been filed by the State to detain Russell, which will be reviewed by a judge on Monday. Until then, Russell remains in custody.
The police responded around 1:30 pm on August 26 to the 700 block of E. Frye following a Shot Spotter alert indicating 28 rounds had been fired. Upon arrival, officers found a victim suffering from non-life-threatening injuries despite being shot multiple times. Surveillance footage captured the event, showing the victim fleeing from two armed men who continued firing at him as he attempted to escape over a fence.
Detectives were able to identify Russell as one of the shooters after reviewing additional surveillance videos. He was apprehended during a traffic stop yesterday.
