The Illinois Flag Commission has announced the selection of its Top 10 finalists for the state flag redesign contest. This decision follows a review of nearly 5,000 submissions. Public voting is scheduled to begin in January.
Commission members were tasked with selecting up to 10 preferred designs from the submissions before their meeting on December 9, where they finalized their choices to just ten.
Starting in January, residents will be able to cast their votes online at www.ilsos.gov/stateflag. They can choose from one of the new designs or opt for one of three former flags: the current state flag, the 1918 Centennial Flag, and the 1968 Sesquicentennial Flag.
Once public voting concludes, the commission will present its findings and recommendations to the Illinois General Assembly by April 1, 2025. The assembly will then decide whether to adopt a new flag design, revert to a previous version, or keep the current flag unchanged.
The designs available for public voting in January are accessible online.
