January 6, 2025, Peoria, IL – Rufus Sanders, aged 60, has been charged with armed robbery following an incident at the South Peoria Dollar General in July of last year. During a detention hearing today, the State's Petition to Detain was approved, resulting in Sanders remaining in custody until his trial.

The robbery took place on July 18, 2023. Police responded to a call at the Dollar General located at 4003 SW Adams. An employee reported that a man wearing a white mask and wielding a machete entered the store and demanded money from the cashier. The suspect proceeded to go behind the counter and took approximately $344 before fleeing. The event was captured on surveillance video.

In their investigation, detectives recovered a discarded mask near the scene. DNA evidence from this mask led them to identify Sanders as the suspect. He was subsequently located and arrested over the weekend.

The investigation into this case is still ongoing. Authorities urge anyone with information related to this incident to contact the Peoria Police Department at 309-673-4521.
