Washington, D.C. – Congressman Darin LaHood of Illinois' 16th Congressional District issued a statement today regarding the appointment of Kevin McCumber as the Clerk of the United States House of Representatives for the 119th Congress. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson formally appointed McCumber to this position.
“I am thrilled that Kevin McCumber was selected to serve as the new Clerk of the House of Representatives for the 119th Congress,” said Rep. LaHood. “Kevin grew up in Woodford County, in Illinois’ 16th Congressional District. From a young age, Mr. McCumber showed a faithful commitment to our country. In 1996, he was nominated to participate in the United States House of Representatives Page program for high school students. After a combined 20 years on Capitol Hill serving in the Clerk’s office, I have no doubt he has the experience and skillset required to serve the House of Representatives in this role. I am proud and honored to have a native son of Central Illinois selected for this very important position.”
McCumber hails from Germantown Hills within Illinois' 16th Congressional District and is an alumnus of Metamora Township High School. His career began with his nomination by former Congressman Ray LaHood for the Congressional Page Program, leading him to serve as a Page in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Following his initial service on Capitol Hill, McCumber worked as a 911 dispatcher for Woodford County Sheriff's Department before returning to Washington, D.C., where he spent seven years in the House Clerk's office. He later attended the University of Colorado and worked with Lakewood Police Department near Denver before resuming his duties at Capitol Hill in 2012.
In June 2023, McCumber was sworn in as Acting Clerk until his formal appointment by Speaker Johnson during the current Congress.
The role of House Clerk involves significant responsibilities including overseeing over 200 employees, calling Members-elect to order at each Congress's start, and playing a key part in electing a Speaker. The Clerk also prepares and prints the House Journal post-session, certifies all bills and joint resolutions passed, and receives presidential messages when Congress is not convened.
