Tazewell County Republicans Chairman Jim Rule has attributed Stellantis' decision to reopen the Belvidere Assembly Plant to former President Donald Trump's leadership in manufacturing. He contrasted this with what he described as Governor Pritzker’s shortcomings. Rule made these remarks to the Peoria Standard on January 22.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Stellantis has announced plans to restart its idled Belvidere Assembly Plant in Illinois, with intentions to produce a new midsize truck within two years. The company also plans investments in facilities located in Toledo, Ohio, and Kokomo, Indiana. In a letter addressed to employees, North America Chief Operating Officer Antonio Filosa credited discussions between Stellantis Chairman John Elkann and Trump about enhancing U.S. auto manufacturing and jobs as influential factors in this decision. This move addresses a significant issue from the 2023 United Auto Workers (UAW) contract negotiations, allowing 1,500 workers to return to Belvidere and reinforcing Stellantis' manufacturing presence in the United States.

CNBC reported that during meetings with Trump before his inauguration, Elkann outlined substantial U.S. investments. These include reopening an Illinois plant for midsize pickup truck production by 2027, creating 1,500 jobs, and relocating Dodge Durango SUV production from Mexico to a Detroit facility. Additional support is planned for sites in Toledo and Kokomo. Elkann emphasized the importance of strengthening Stellantis' U.S. manufacturing legacy and workforce stability. Leaders from Detroit’s Big Three automakers, including General Motors CEO Mary Barra, also engaged with Trump, expressing their dedication to the U.S. auto industry and economy.

Jim Rule has been serving as Chairman of the Tazewell County Republicans since his election in 2018. According to the organization’s website, Rule is committed to increasing Republican voter turnout, expanding party membership, and effectively communicating party positions on issues important to Tazewell County voters.
