Today in Peoria, Illinois, Demoriele L. Sims, 36, was charged with failure to report an accident in connection with a hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of Quentin M. Shinkle, 38. The State has filed a petition to detain Sims, which will be reviewed on Monday. Until then, Sims remains in custody.

The incident occurred at 1 a.m. on January 13 when police responded to reports of a severely injured male lying in the middle of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue's 2100 block. The victim was identified as Shinkle and succumbed to his injuries days later at the hospital.

Authorities used surveillance footage to identify the suspect vehicle registered to Sims. Upon locating the vehicle, they found significant damage including a caved-in windshield on the driver's side and damage to the bumper, grille, and roof. Plastic pieces recovered from the scene matched those missing from Sims' vehicle.

Sims was taken into custody on Thursday and admitted during questioning that he struck Shinkle and fled without reporting the accident.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Peoria Police Department at 309-673-4521.
