The Illinois General Assembly is gearing up for a significant event in the 2025 legislative session, as Governor Pritzker prepares to deliver the Budget Address on Wednesday, February 19. According to the Governor’s Office of Management and Budget, Illinois faces a $3.2 billion deficit in fiscal year 2026 unless taxes are raised, budget cuts are implemented, or both.

Recently in Springfield, House Republicans called on Governor Pritzker to consider examining services provided by Illinois taxpayers to migrants and undocumented immigrants, with a focus on health care benefits as part of potential budget cuts.

The Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (DHFS) informed a General Assembly committee that programs offering health care to undocumented immigrant adults are projected to cost $558 million in the current fiscal year. Other expenditures include housing, social work, counseling, and education for migrants and undocumented immigrants.

House Republicans expressed their readiness to hold the majority party accountable for spending decisions and anticipate reviewing the roadmap that Governor Pritzker will present in the coming weeks.
