Byron A. Jarvis, a 16-year-old from Peoria, Illinois, has been sentenced to 55 years in prison for the murder of Dahvie P. Brown-Bey. The crime took place in August 2023 in the East Bluff neighborhood and was captured on surveillance video. In the footage, Jarvis is seen approaching a group of youths on a scooter before firing four shots at Dahvie, with three hitting his head. A witness to the shooting, who was only 10 years old at the time, testified against Jarvis during the trial.

The sentencing hearing was attended by many of Dahvie's family members and friends who shared their memories of him as a quiet boy who enjoyed playing football. They addressed Jarvis directly, stating, “You didn’t just destroy us; you destroyed yourself.” Despite their loss, they have expressed forgiveness toward him.

Chief Judge Katherine Gorman presided over the sentencing and voiced her concerns about youth gun violence. She reinforced the views shared by Dahvie’s mother by stating that such behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

At the time of the murder, Jarvis was 14 years old. His case was moved to adult court in December 2023. According to legal provisions, he will serve his sentence in both juvenile and adult facilities and may be eligible for parole after serving 20 years.
