The Medal of Honor, established in the early 1860s, is the highest award for bravery and courage on the battlefield in the United States. It is awarded to service members who “distinguish themselves conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty.”

As of today, 3,547 Medals have been awarded, including 19 double recipients. Currently, there are 61 living recipients.

On National Medal of Honor Day, and every day, we remember and honor the valor and sacrifice displayed by soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen who have earned this distinction.

For more information about the Medal of Honor, its recipients, and history, visit the Congressional Medal of Honor Society's official website.
