Smishing scams are occurring nationwide, prompting a series of reminders on how to avoid falling victim to these fraudulent activities. According to recent advice, individuals should remain vigilant if they receive suspicious text messages claiming they owe money.

Recipients of such texts are advised to refrain from replying to the message. Furthermore, it is stressed that personal or banking information should never be disclosed. Opening links or attachments in unsolicited, suspicious, or unexpected texts or emails is also strongly discouraged.

In the event that someone suspects they are a victim of smishing, they are encouraged to report the incident to law enforcement. Additionally, individuals can file a complaint with the FCC without incurring any costs.

The public is urged to stay informed and exercise caution to protect themselves from these scams.
