Illinois' unemployment rate stood steady at 4.8% in March, according to the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES). This figure is unchanged from the revised February unemployment rate, remaining 0.6% above the national rate of 4.2% for March.

Sector-wise analysis revealed significant year-over-year job losses, particularly in manufacturing, which saw a reduction of 5,500 jobs over a 12-month span. The professional and business services sector experienced an even steeper decline, shedding 12,900 jobs. Despite these declines, growth in the government and health care sectors helped offset some of the job losses experienced in other areas.

The state reported 321,500 unemployed individuals, marking a slight 0.1% increase from the prior month, but a 2.5% decrease compared to the same month last year. The labor force decreased by 0.1% over the month while showing a 0.6% increase when viewed annually.
