A Peoria County jury has found Tramier Pate guilty of First-Degree Murder in the death of Omarius Gates. The verdict was reached nearly two years after the incident, which occurred during an attempted armed robbery.
On June 26, 2023, police responded to a shooting at the intersection of Richwoods and Molleck in Peoria at around 10:20 PM. Officers discovered Omarius Gates, aged 14, lying face down and unresponsive. Despite attempts to save him, Gates died at the scene.
During the trial, Omarius's cousin testified about the events leading up to the shooting. He explained that they had been with a group, including Pate, playing basketball at The Woodlands Apartment Complex before walking to a nearby store. As Omarius and his cousin walked together, Pate approached from behind with a gun and attempted to rob Omarius. After firing a single shot into Omarius’s back, everyone fled except for his cousin who called 911. In court, he identified Pate as the shooter.
Sentencing for Tramier Pate is scheduled for July 9.
