The Secretary of State’s Office has issued a warning to residents of Illinois about a new text message scam. The fraudulent messages claim to be from the "Illinois State Department of Motor Vehicles" and threaten to suspend vehicle registration and driving privileges.

These texts are phishing attempts, aiming to deceive individuals into providing personal or financial information. Officials advise recipients not to respond or click on any links in unsolicited texts and emails.

According to the Secretary of State’s Office, legitimate text messages are only sent as reminders for scheduled DMV appointments. They do not send texts concerning driver’s license or vehicle registration status.

Residents are urged to report any scam attempts to the Federal Trade Commission by visiting reportfraud.ftc.gov.
