The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has announced the commencement of two road construction projects in Whiteside County, set to begin on June 2, weather permitting.

The first project involves work on the bridge carrying U.S. 30 over Elkhorn Creek, located west of Sterling. This project will focus on cleaning and painting the bridge. During construction, one lane will remain open with traffic managed by temporary signals. The expected completion date is in August.

Simultaneously, IDOT will start work on Moline Road in Whiteside County. The 15-mile stretch extends from U.S. 30 west of Sterling to East Street in Erie. Notably, the section shared with Illinois 78 is excluded from this project. The work will involve milling and resurfacing the road, leading to daytime lane closures managed by flaggers. This $7.8 million project aims for completion by mid-October.

Motorists should anticipate delays and are advised to allocate extra travel time when passing through these areas due to potential slow or stopped traffic conditions. Alternate routes are recommended where possible to avoid the construction zones.

Drivers are urged to stay vigilant for altered conditions and signage within the work zones, adhere to posted speed limits, avoid using mobile devices, and remain alert for workers and equipment.

For ongoing updates from IDOT District 2, follow them on X at @IDOTDistrict2 or access area construction details via IDOT’s traveler information map at GettingAroundIllinois.com.
