The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) has announced that June 13 through 16 will be designated as free fishing days in Illinois for the year 2025. During this period, individuals can fish without needing to purchase a fishing license, salmon stamp, or inland trout stamp within the state. The initiative aims to encourage non-anglers to explore the activity and provide an opportunity for children to engage in fishing.

Organizations and groups interested in obtaining fishing equipment and educational materials can fill out an online form provided by IDNR. The department will supply these materials while stocks last.

Typically, anyone over the age of 16 is required to have a fishing license to fish in Illinois, with exceptions for active-duty military personnel and individuals with disabilities. Standard fishing licenses are available for $15 from various vendors across Illinois or online. Additional information about fishing in Illinois can be found at ifishillinois.org.
