Governor JB Pritzker was questioned by the House Oversight Committee in Washington, D.C. regarding Illinois' sanctuary state laws. During an eight-hour hearing, Pritzker and governors from other sanctuary states like Minnesota and New York faced scrutiny over their support for these laws, which restrict local law enforcement from collaborating with federal authorities to detain and deport certain illegal immigrants.

In response to Pritzker's testimony, Illinois House Minority Leader Tony McCombie stated: “Governor Pritzker’s sanctuary state policies have failed—and now he’s in Washington trying to answer for Illinois’ sanctuary state disaster."

McCombie highlighted financial concerns, noting that since 2022, Illinois taxpayers have spent over $3 billion on services for illegal immigrants amidst rising crime and infrastructure issues. She criticized the recent state budget as being the largest in history and included allocations such as "$1.3 million for a migrant shelter that was never built" and significant funds for programs aiding illegal immigrants.

Under Governor Pritzker's leadership, Illinois has reportedly become a popular destination for illegal immigrants due to generous benefits funded by taxpayers. Current laws prevent local authorities from assisting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in locating dangerous individuals.

Pritzker's policies are seen by critics as prioritizing the protection of illegal immigrants over citizens' safety, with approximately 530,000 undocumented immigrants residing in Illinois at considerable taxpayer expense each year. The migrant situation is partly attributed to invitations extended by Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson to unvetted migrants.

The financial impact of supporting undocumented immigrants is said to divert funds from essential programs benefiting all residents of Illinois. The state's unique provision of Medicare-like benefits to undocumented individuals adds further strain on resources.

Currently facing legal challenges from the Department of Justice over sanctuary policies with potential threats of losing federal funding, Governor Pritzker continues his national political activities while critics highlight ongoing negative effects within Illinois due to what they describe as failed leadership.

As McCombie emphasized: "This should not be a partisan issue: the safety and economic prosperity of Illinois citizens should be our first priority."
