Things aren't always as black and white as they appear to be with the Dunlap Valley Middle School chess team, which has now placed in the top four schools for three years in a row at the Illinois Elementary School Association (IESA) State Chess Tournament.
The team made it clear it's no rank and file participant, taking third at the most recent tournament, a two-day event held at the Peoria Civic Center. It garnered 38 wins among the three grade levels in competition, with eighth-graders Grant B., Aayush S. and Kushal M. scoring individual bronze medals.
Eighth-graders Milind F., Aryan G., Nikolas G. and Abhinav V also played well in the tournament, the school's website said.
A full chart of tournament results is available on the IESA website at http://iesa.org/activities/chs/scoreboards/index.asp?Year=2017&Class=Single.
