Cass and Scott counties, along with 22 other counties in Illinois, have more voters on their official registration lists than voting-age residents, according to a letter sent to the state by the oversight group Judicial Watch recently.
The letter threatened to sue if the state did not comply with the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) and clean up the voter rolls. In some cases, voters might have moved out of the county or state or died. The NVRA requires the state to perform regular maintenance to ensure that ineligible and non-citizen voters are removed from official voter registration lists.
Judicial Watch sent similar letters to 10 other states as well, giving all of the alleged violators 90 days to address the issue and provide documentation of the efforts to ensure the voter registration lists are accurate.
In addition to Cass and Scott counties, the Judicial Watch letter specifically mentioned Alexander, Bureau, Clark, Crawford, DuPage, Franklin, Grundy, Hardin, Henderson, Jefferson, Jersey, Massac, McHenry, Mercer, Monroe, Pulaski, Rock Island, Sangamon, Union, Wabash, Washington and White counties.
The data was obtained from Illinois' 2014 voter registration records, the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey and other public records.
