Doing a little summer reading will earn grade school students in the 73rd District a lot of rewards, including ice cream and a swimming party, Rep. Ryan Spain (R-Peoria) announced recently.
“Students who read over the summer enter the school year in the fall ahead of students who do not read over the summer,” Spain said, according to a press release. “This is a fun way to reward students with a free ice cream and swimming party for simply reading eight books over their summer break and returning a form signed by a parent or guardian to invite them to a swimming party.”
To participate, students must read eight books by July 31 and get their parents or guardians to sign off on a "Summer Reading Club" brochure. Area schools distributed the brochures, but any students who did not receive one can request one at Spain’s district office in Peoria.
“It’s incumbent on all of us in the community to encourage students to get ahead by becoming better readers," Spain said in the release.
