Elkhart Rural Fire Protection District responded to 12 calls in 2017 - 7.7 percent less than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Elkhart Rural included seven fires - four structure fires, one vehicle fire and two other fires. The fire department also responded to two calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $5,000 in fire loss - or about $714 per fire.

The department also received three false calls.
