City of Canton issued the following announcement on Aug. 14.
City crews will be flushing hydrants every Tuesday or Wednesday until November. City crews manually flush and use auto flushing devices to flush hydrants (pictured below).
Hydrant flushing is the quick release of water from fire hydrants. It’s a controlled procedure that is vital to the general maintenance of the City’s water distribution system. It ensures adequate water flow is available to fire fighters, residents and businesses. It also helps maintain the City’s water clarity and quality by clearing iron and mineral deposits from the water mains (distribution pipes). Sometimes hydrant flushing can make the water temporarily appear rust-colored because the iron and mineral deposits in the water get stirred up. Water is safe to use and consume during hydrant flushing.
The City of Canton has installed two automatic fire hydrant flushing devices. These devices are small, automatic fire hydrant flushing
red boxes that are applied to the side of a fire hydrant and will automatically flush water from the hydrant several times a day. The devices are currently located on South First and South Second Avenues, but they will be rotated to new locations every Tuesday.
