Candidates who win at the county level are not guaranteed to win the primary for their respective district. Primaries decide who will represent each party in federal and state elections for each position and the areas they represent.

Incumbent Democrat Kwame Raoul won the Attorney General Democratic primary in the county and state.
Republican candidate Dan Brady won his Secretary of State primary in the county. He amassed 4,927 votes in the county, according to preliminary results. He also won the state primary, earning 76.3 percent of the vote.
Democrat Alexi Giannoulias won the Secretary of State Democratic primary in the county. He also won the state primary, earning 53 percent of the vote.
Illinois primaries are considered open, meaning voters can vote for parties they are not affiliated with. For example, a Republican can vote in the Democrat primary, but must state their affiliation on their voter card.
