Rep. Tim Butler (R-Springfield) recently shared a Facebook post from the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum announcing the display of an original, handwritten version of the Gettysburg Address.
"We have good news and even better news! We'll be displaying an original, handwritten version of the #GettysburgAddress Nov. 18-28," the post said. "Plus, admission to the museum will be free this Saturday, the anniversary of #AbrahamLincoln delivering the famous speech!"
Butler recently made the news after announcing his resignation from the House shortly after being re-elected.
"As I have said from the day I was sworn in, I am not going to do this job forever," he said in a Facebook post, The State Journal-Register reported. "My fourth great-grandfather, Lewis Barker, served in four General Assemblies. Abraham Lincoln served in four General Assemblies. If four terms are good enough for them, four terms are good enough for me."
Butler announced his resignation from the State Legislature just days after winning re-election in the 95th District. According to WCIA, Butler will work for the Illinois Railroad Association. He said the organization reached out with the offer when it was too late to get a replacement on the ballot. “These opportunities don’t follow the guidelines of election season, they don’t follow the timeline of election season,” Butler said.
Butler has served in the Illinois House of Representatives since March 2015, and his current committee assignments include the Transportation: Vehicles & Safety (Republican Spokesperson); the Tourism Committee; Public Utilities; Museums, Arts, & Cultural Enhanceme; Executive; Energy & Environment; Transportation Issues Subcommittee; Redistricting Committee (Republican Spokesperson); Telecom/Video Subcommittee; Citizen Impact Subcommittee; Counties & Townships; Clean Energy Subcommittee.
