The Bob Michel Bridge rehabilitation project in Peoria, Illinois is set to be completed soon, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). The $24.6 million project aims to improve the bridge and enhance connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists between the East Peoria Levee and Peoria Warehouse districts. The project, which was completed in one construction season, has resulted in quicker, safer, and more cost-effective improvements.

Representative Ryan Spain, the House Deputy Minority Leader and a lifelong Peorian, expressed his satisfaction with the progress of the project. He emphasized the significance of the Peoria region as an economic and transportation hub for central Illinois. Spain believes that the completion of this project, along with continued investment in infrastructure, especially river bridges, will bring long-term benefits to communities, families, and small businesses.

The Bob Michel Bridge is a vital link between Peoria and East Peoria, accommodating approximately 17,000 vehicles per day on Illinois 40 over the Illinois River. Both communities have been experiencing a resurgence in commercial and retail activity along the riverfront. The bridge was closed in March to facilitate the construction of a new deck, marking the first time since its opening in 1993. The rehabilitation project also included structural repairs, modernized traffic signals, and drainage improvements.

One of the key enhancements of the project is the consolidation of narrow sidewalks on both sides of the traffic. These sidewalks have been transformed into a 14-foot-wide path protected by a concrete barrier, providing a safer travel option for bicyclists and pedestrians. Additionally, the improved path connects to the region's trail network, including the Rock Island Greenway Trail and the River Trail of Illinois. LED lighting has also been installed to enhance visibility and safety.

With all project elements anticipated to be completed by mid-December, the bridge is set to reopen to the public, weather permitting. The decision to close the bridge completely to cars and trucks and complete the work in a single phase has resulted in significant time and cost savings. It has also reduced the safety risks for workers and the public by eliminating traffic in the work zone.

For more information on IDOT projects, interested individuals can visit the official IDOT website. The completion of the Bob Michel Bridge rehabilitation project marks a significant milestone for the Peoria region, enhancing connectivity, ensuring long-term benefits, and promoting the safety of all users.
