The Department of Public Works is closely monitoring the Illinois River as it prepares for potential flooding. As of today, Wednesday, January 31, the forecasted crest levels remain at 22 feet. The river is expected to reach its peak tomorrow afternoon and into the morning of Friday, February 2.
According to the Department, "At 22.7 feet, flooding begins in low-lying areas in Riverfront Park." In preparation for this possibility, sandbagging efforts will commence if the forecasted crest levels increase. The Department assures the public that equipment is ready and plans are in place should the levels rise.
Despite the concern, the Department does not anticipate any impacts on businesses along the riverfront or Water Street. However, there may be temporary closures of parking lots and sidewalks along the riverfront tomorrow and Friday.
The fluctuation of river levels is attributed to ice jams and melt rates in the northern parts of the Illinois River. Public Works will closely monitor the situation and take necessary action if crest levels rise again.
Residents are advised to stay informed through official updates and to follow any instructions or precautions issued by the Department of Public Works.
