Cold winter days in Illinois often require drivers to take extra precautions to ensure their vehicles are ready to hit the road. While there are both truths and myths surrounding the best methods for warming up a vehicle on these chilly days, it is important to separate fact from fiction.

According to experts, the outdated practice of letting a vehicle idle for an extended period of time is not recommended. This not only wastes fuel but also contributes to unnecessary emissions. Modern cars are equipped with advanced technology and engines that are fully lubricated within 20 to 30 seconds, eliminating the need for excessive idling.

Instead, the fastest way to warm up an engine is by driving. However, it is important to start off slowly and avoid revving the engine until the temperature gauge begins to rise. Normal driving for 5-10 minutes allows the car to reach its optimal operating temperature more efficiently than idling, reducing fuel consumption and minimizing wear and tear on components.

Clearing the windshield of ice, snow, and debris is essential for safe winter driving. Utilizing the defroster and keeping an ice scraper and snow brush in the vehicle can expedite the process. Additionally, for owners of electric vehicles, it is advisable to warm up the car while still plugged in to preserve battery range. Driving away with a cold EV will cause the vehicle to use stored electricity to heat up the interior, reducing driving range.

In addition to these tips, there are a few additional measures that can be taken to safely warm up a vehicle on cold winter days. If parking in a garage, it is important to ensure that the garage door is open before starting the engine. In some major cities, there are restrictions on idling time, with fines imposed on those found in violation. For quicker warm-up times, parking in an insulated or heated garage can be beneficial. Plugging in a spare electric blanket and placing it over the engine, with the hood closed on top, can also help retain heat. However, it is worth noting that remote start devices, while convenient, can promote unnecessary engine idling and should be used sparingly.

By following these guidelines, drivers can safely and efficiently warm up their vehicles on cold winter days, ensuring a smooth and comfortable journey ahead.
