With National Ag Week taking place from March 17-23, 2024, the Illinois State Capitol was abuzz with activity during the Session Week before as agricultural advocates including local farm bureau groups, FFA students, and livestock and energy industry advocates took to their State Capitol to advocate for Illinois leading role in agricultural production of energy, food, and fiber for the world.

Illinois is the #1 soybean producing state in the country, with 15% of all U.S. soybeans produced in Illinois. Additionally, Illinois is the #2 corn producing state in the country, with 13% of the country’s supply of corn grown on Illinois farms. Crop land makes up 76% of Illinois.

The importance of the agricultural sector of Illinois’ economy was highlighted as leaders of Illinois Farm Bureau, including IFB President Brian Duncan, joined representatives of nearly 50 diverse agriculture organizations to discuss key issues with lawmakers in Springfield. Duncan emphasized the significance of the industry, stating, "This is our day to show our state’s elected officials that we are one and that we are an important voice on issues that are not only important for agriculture today, but for the future and for future generations."

House Republicans in Illinois have been working diligently to address issues affecting family farms, particularly focusing on the estate tax. Representative Norine Hammond highlighted the impact of the estate tax on farm families, stating, “Illinois’ estate tax hurts our farm families. House Republicans have consistently fought to increase the exclusion amount to account for rising farmland values.” Representative Charlie Meier echoed this sentiment, emphasizing how the estate tax has negatively affected family farms for decades.

Meier further stressed the importance of improving estate tax exemptions for farmers to ensure the preservation of family farms for future generations. Representative Jason R. Bunting also voiced his support for measures that would prevent family farms from being sold off due to the burden of estate taxes, stating, “For far too long, Illinois’ estate tax system has threatened family farms – like mine and my neighbors – with the prospect of having to sell the farm if there is a death in the family.”

The agricultural landscape in Illinois extends beyond corn and soybeans, with the state being a top grower of various specialty crops. From pumpkins and peaches to apples and grapes, Illinois farmers contribute significantly to the production of over 64 vegetables and 15 fruit and nut crops, generating nearly $500 million in sales.

As Illinois continues to play a pivotal role in agricultural production, understanding the crop seasons in the state is crucial for farmers and residents alike. With climate differences across various regions, knowing the optimal planting dates for different crops is essential. From Rockford in the north to Cairo in the south, Illinois offers a diverse agricultural landscape that contributes significantly to the state's economy and the nation's food supply.
