Waukegan's official Trick or Treat will take place on Sunday, October 27, from 2 pm to 5 pm. The Waukegan Police Department has issued several safety tips for residents and visitors to follow during the festivities.
The department advises knowing the neighborhood in which trick-or-treating will occur and choosing houses that are familiar and well-lit. Parents or trusted adults should accompany children and walk them to the door to receive treats, ensuring children never enter a home.
For older children who may trick-or-treat without an adult, going in groups is recommended. Children should approach only those houses with lights on and Halloween decorations visible.
Costumes should not drag on the ground to prevent tripping hazards, and face paint is suggested over masks for better visibility. Upon returning home, parents should check all candy before consumption, discarding any unwrapped or suspicious items.
Children are reminded to avoid interactions with strangers, including accepting rides or going anywhere with someone they do not know. Adherence to traffic laws and using crosswalks when available are also emphasized for safety.
"Be aware of your surroundings at all times and have a great time," concludes the advisory from the Waukegan Police Department.
