The Ordinance Amending the Code of Ordinances Concerning Zoning Certificates and Closing Letter Fees passed City Council. As of Monday, October 16th, Closing Letters will be issued from the Building and Code Department. Applications are requested to be submitted as soon as the property is listed for sale but not less than 30 days prior to sale.
An honorary street naming will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 18 at the corner of State and Adams Streets to honor Annie Minerva Turnbo Malone, largely regarded as the first African American female millionaire. The location was chosen due to its proximity to Ms. Malone’s former Peoria home.
Kimberly Richardson, Assistant City Manager of the city of Peoria, has been honored with the esteemed Assistant Excellence In Leadership Award by the International City/County Management Association (ICMA). Assistant City Manager Richardson will receive the award next Tuesday at the annual ICMA conference in Austin, Texas.
Two road work projects will start on Monday, October 2nd, in Waukegan: Glen Flora Avenue from McAree Road to Lewis Avenue and, separately, Sheridan Road from Greenwood Avenue to Glen Flora Avenue.
Mayor Rita Ali will announce the second round of Peoria Role Model Project participants on Wednesday, October 4 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the Peoria Civic Center, Ballroom A. The initiative, funded through a grant by PNC Foundation, is intended to help inspire and empower 150 local youth by connecting them with local Black professionals who will serve as role models year-round.
The city of Peoria was awarded $712,000 from the Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA) through the Strong Communities Program. This year, $19 million dollars was distributed through the Strong Communities Program. Peoria was one of 68 units of local governments to receive funds. The money awarded will be used to demolish vacant and abandoned properties in 2024 within the 61603 and 61605 zip codes.
Illinois Department of Transportation has given the notice to proceed to SKC Construction to begin crack and joint sealing work on Illinois Route 137 including the Amstutz Expressway, from the south end of the Amstutz at Genesee/Sheridan to Greenwood Avenue. The tentative start date is Monday, September 25th; the work is projected to be completed in 25 working days. Single lane road closures are expected for the extent of the project, and traffic control signs will be up. Delays may occur and traffic pattern changes may take place during the project.
The public is invited to attend the graduation ceremony for PeoriaCorps on Friday, September 29, 2023, from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at 813 SW Washington Street. The graduation will highlight the successful completion of PeoriaCorps’ eighth cohort, including, Nadia Altom, Stephanie Moreno, Kameron Sheetz, Frederick Williams, and Jonathan Vota. The featured speaker will be Sherry Carter-Allen. The city of Peoria acknowledges the hard work and dedication of these graduates, who have not only completed their service but have also gained valuable skills and deepened their commitment to civic engagement.
Congressman Darin LaHood (IL-16) applauded the United States Air Force's selection of Peoria's 182nd Airlift Wing as a preferred location to receive C-130J Super Hercules upgrades to replace their aging C-130Hs. LaHood has been a longtime advocate for this upgrade, a process which began eight years ago.

Peoria County announced today that the Civic Leadership Academy (CLA), an annual program held each fall in conjunction with the City of Peoria, will return in September 2023. The free program, designed to help community members understand governmental functions, includes a weekly session at either a County or City government facility and usually involves a presentation, tour, and time for questions and answers.
Congressman Darin LaHood (IL-16) announced that bipartisan legislation he introduced, the Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act of 2023, has received the support of over one-third of the U.S. House of Representatives. The legislation, which would support the construction of nearly two million new affordable homes over the next decade, surpassed 150 cosponsors in August.
In an Aug. 25 Facebook post, Illinois State Sen. Win Stoller (R-Peoria) expressed disbelief at the news that Chicago sued Kia and other manufacturers over car thefts. The lawsuit was filed on Aug. 24 in Cook County Circuit Court.
