Havana Community Unit School District 126 students suspended 259 times in a single school year

Havana Community Unit School District 126 reported 259 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 259 students during the year. That equates to 26.2 percent of the 987 students enrolled.

Of the 171 in-school suspensions, 108 were given to boys and 63 were given to girls, including 35 elementary or middle schoolers and 136 high schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 170 incidents. There were one incidents of violence without physical injury. For 149 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 88 out-of-school suspensions, 53 were given to boys and 35 were given to girls, including 10 elementary or middle schoolers and 78 high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 72 incidents. There were nine incidents of violence without physical injury. For 37 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
